Hanfu Accessories: Pairing with Traditional Hairpins and Folded Paper Hanfu Hairpins
According to Jiang Kayu, a researcher from the China Research Institute of Economy, who was interviewed by China Industry and Economics News, buying hanfu is just the beginning of spending. Following that, there are also significant expenses such as arm bands, traditional handbags, matching shoes, and even oiled paper umbrellas, round fans, etc. For headwear alone, there are hairpins, hair combs, hair sticks, hairbands, forehead jewels, hairpins, and so on. These can be made of pearls, jade, artificial flowers, and come in different colors and styles to match different types of hanfu. The expenditure on peripheral products is no less than that on hanfu itself. The event organizers showcased Chengdu's cultural heritage and beauty through traditional prayer ceremonies, garden tours, and group dances, promoting Chinese traditional culture and warming up for the World University Games. Beside the Jinjiang River and amidst the bamboo forest, over 500 hanfu enthusiasts gathered at Wanjing Tower Park. As performances like "Grandeur Dance" and "Etiquette of the Nation Group Dance" took place, the flowing sleeves and the elegance of the robes were on full display. “Brother Ming Handcrafts Traditional Hanfu: Experiencing the Beauty of Thousand-Year-Old Chinese Attire”
One, Research and Material Selection As a lover of hanfu, I am deeply attracted by the beauty of thousand-year-old Chinese attire. This time, I decided to personally make a set of traditional hanfu. Before starting, I conducted detailed research to understand the styles of hanfu from different periods, and browsed through a large number of hanfu images and literature. Next, I began to consider the issue of material selection. Considering that silk, satin, and linen were commonly used fabrics in ancient times, I ultimately chose a high-quality piece of pure silk satin as my main material, to ensure the texture and authenticity of the garment. Two, Cutting and Tailoring After selecting the fabric, I began the work of cutting and tailoring the clothes. First, I made detailed measurements based on my body shape and drew a set of detailed plans. Then, I carefully cut the fabric into the required parts with scissors and a cutter, such as the front panel, sleeves, and trouser legs. This process requires patience and meticulous manual operation to ensure that each piece of fabric is exactly the right size and shape according to the design requirements. Three, Sewing and Embroidery After completing the cutting, I… -
15 Years of Dunhuang Silk Research – TEXTILES FROM DUNHUANG Released
Silk is undoubtedly the driving force behind the prosperity of the Silk Road, and Dunhuang is the richest and most concentrated Silk Road town in terms of unearthed silk objects. For historical reasons, these surviving "treasures" scattered around the world have not been systematically organized and studied. Zhao Feng (赵丰), professor at Donghua University and director of the China Silk Museum, led a team of Dunhuang silk researchers in collaboration with experts and scholars from cultural and museum institutions around the world. It took 15 years to systematically organize and study the Dunhuang silk relics scattered around the world, resulting in TEXTILES FROM DUNHUANG (敦煌丝绸艺术全集), a magnum opus. The complete collection was launched at the "Silk Road and Silk Art" forum at Donghua University on October 15, 2021, includes IN UK COLLECTIONS, IN FRENCH COLLECTIONS, IN RUSSIAN COLLECTIONS, IN THE LUSHUN MUSEUM, IN THE DUNHUANG ACADEMY, with millions of words and more than a thousand pictures. The release of "TEXTILES FROM DUNHUANG" fills a gap in the study of silk in Dunhuang, providing important support for research on the Silk Road and the history of textile and costume art. The vast amount of first-ever physical remains plus documentary comparative studies… -
Exploring the Mysteries of Sanxingdui in Beijing and Shanghai
Since its excavation in 1986, the Sanxingdui archaeological site has been a subject of ongoing debate and fascination, particularly regarding the nature of its pits—whether they served as sacrificial pits or for ceremonial objects. Recent excavations in 2021 further deepen our understanding, yet the full story of Sanxingdui's flourishing era remains shrouded in mystery. Despite these enigmas, interest in the Sanxingdui excavations has not waned. 2023 January Model Call Outing
Hey everyone! College applications have been kicking my ass for the past few months so I've been pretty silent for a while, but I'm finally done—which means more hanfu content for you all to see! For those of you who don’t know me, I’m redsugar, or Tangtang (or a bajillion other variants of red and sugar in multiple languages that people have given to me as nicknames)! I’m a gender fluid Taiwanese-American hanfu designer based in the US. I’ve been part of the hanfuhouse community for a couple years now and written extensively about my historical research and designs. -
Hanfu Unearthed I: Introduction
Hey everyone, sorry for the hiatus! I’m back now with a new series of articles—Hanfu Unearthed, a series examining the more technical, historical origins of hanfu. This series of articles is going to focus on the archaeological side of hanfu research: the relics that we’ve uncovered from various dig sites and tombs. The way that hanfu is defined by most is that its shape and construction is designed off of these relics, so let’s take a look at the real historical references that we have. A quick disclaimer—this series of articles is a result of my own research. I’m not a trained historian or archaeologist, I’m an inexperienced student with an interest in hanfu and chinese history. I don’t have a works cited page for these (though I can point you towards some of the resources I used off the top of my head if you really want them), and I didn’t spend a long time verifying my sources beyond checking with multiple sources to make sure the information was consistent, because frankly I don’t have the time to do that. All articles will come with this disclaimer, so please, please understand that I’m doing my best with what I…
