What to Do When Girls’ Hanfu is Too Big, What to Do When Historical Hanfu is Too Long
Just as we've broken through one tough challenge, another big obstacle follows closely behind—how do we handle the blazing sun during the large class break? I've been singing "I Believe" in my heart to boost my own morale, while silently telling myself, "I can definitely overcome this hurdle!" It's almost time for the break to end! Sun Yu walked up to me and said, "Huang Xinyuan, let's go on duty!" Haha! Great, I can finally escape this "big disaster." As the saying goes: "Good fortune comes with misfortune, and within misfortune lies good fortune." We ran around a lot while on duty, so after a discussion, we all agreed: it's time to take a walk. [Interview] How to Become a Hanfu Model
Hanfu models are arguably the luckiest of all, as they are always the first to try on the latest hanfu and take beautiful photos. But becoming a good hanfu model also takes a lot of hard work. Modern Hanfu found four hanfu models and let's hear their stories. No.1 A Shang (阿尚) I am a college student studying drama performance, and I chose to join the hanfu modeling industry in my freshman year because I wanted to gain more shooting experience to better train myself and to reduce some economic pressure for my family, and I had participated in some aspects of modeling work. When I first joined the hanfu modeling industry, I thought hanfu modeling was the same as print modeling, but then I realized that I had to have my own "Yun Wei (韵味, charm)" to make it work. And the outside world's opinion about hanfu is really too single, each hanfu model as a "show" on stage for a minute or even a dozen seconds, may have to do a full month or two months of preparation off stage. From the understanding of the costume, to the selection of the overall style, to the design of… -
7 Hanfu Styles for Prom
It’s prom season! Now, I know that the age group for prom is pretty small, but I’m going to prom in an outfit of my own this year (I’ll be uploading an outfit analysis of it once I’m done arranging everything in a separate article) and I thought I’d compile a few ideas for anyone else to follow in my steps. This doesn’t only include prom, of course—homecoming, other formal or semiformal occasions (if it’s black tie or has a really strict dress code playit safe and don’t do something too extravagant), etc. are also great places to show off your hanfu. Matching Ming Dynasty Sets One popular tradition for prom is to match your prom date’s outfit when you go to prom. There’s lots of ways to do this—for western clothing, many people match ties to their date’s dress or vice versa, and a couple wearing both feminine and masculine coded clothing also looks very charming—but, luckily, this tradition matches with a common hanfu trend: couple’s outfits, or CP outfits, as they’re often called. This isn’t just for official couples, of course—plenty of friends, siblings, and the like also wear CP outfits for fun. Some of the most popular… -
Why is Li Ziqi So Popular?
I have received a lot of PMs recently, all of them asking me the same question. Do you know or like Li Ziqi or not? Do you think that she can be counted as a sort of Chinese culture export? Of course, before that, I have thought about this for a long time. I started to perceive Li Ziqi from 2017. So I think I have my own perspective of what she's doing, and it's worth sharing. On-screen, Li Ziqi’s life seems to defy the rules of reality. With more than 60 million fans worldwide, the Chinese internet celebrity is famous for her videos, where she performs the work of a farmer with the grace of a fairy. In one video, she picks flowers on horseback in a red cape, invoking the image of Red Riding Hood. In another, she builds an item of bamboo furniture set using traditional Chinese techniques. Li Ziqi rode on a horse Actually, I remember that back in the summer of 2017, she had a lot of haters who were doubting the real intention behind her videos. And then she put out an article that explains how many of the materials she does herself and how much hard work she puts in it… -
[Interview] What Is It Like to Become a Hanfu Designer
What is it like to be a hanfu designer? Let's take a look at Hanfu Shi Dai (汉服世代) interviews with four hanfu designers. Kong Xin Yan (空心砚) Hello, I'm Kong Xin Yan and I've been in touch with hanfu for more than 10 years! Over the years I have been concerned about the demand for modern hanfu and saw the potential market demand for non-antique hanfu, but there are many inconveniences in wearing traditional hanfu directly, which triggered my design inspiration and also formed my own design feature - "Shi Zhuang Han Cai (时装汉裁, tailoring fashion in Han style)". Traditional hanfu leaps directly from ancient times into modern times, missing the process of cultural renewal, and many styles are based on the ancient social background. If we want to further develop hanfu, we have to think about these questions: How should traditional hanfu serve the current fast-paced society and what functions should it achieve in an era when there are noblemen like emperors, generals and princesses? "Shi Zhuang Han Cai" is my answer to these questions after thinking and practicing. In fact, my family has been reluctant to wear hanfu for more than ten years, but they are happy… -
Common Measurements of Hanfu – Wear Guide
Hey everyone! So there were a couple people in my hanfu server asking about what different kinds of measurements of hanfu were. I answered and did a little compilation of the most basic measurements that you'll see on most sizing charts, if you're choosing a size and buying from a vendor, as well as some that are often used to create patterns and the like. Hope that it's a helpful reference! I've included both traditional and simplified characters in this for better reading and some of my own notes as helpful explanations, let me know if there's any questions you need answered. Body Measurements Let’s start with the basic measurements of your own body. - Height. Usually in centimeters, if you don’t understand any of the other measurements, this is the one you want to go by. - weight. often comes up in either kg or lbs, and it’s pretty easy to figure out which one through common sense. I would recommend that you don’t trust this one too much though since everyone is like… a different density. - three rounds, the standard starting point for more detailed measurements. These include the three below: - the bust. Measure around… -

Hanfu Unearthed I: Introduction
Hey everyone, sorry for the hiatus! I’m back now with a new series of articles—Hanfu Unearthed, a series examining the more technical, historical origins of hanfu. This series of articles is going to focus on the archaeological side of hanfu research: the relics that we’ve uncovered from various dig sites and tombs. The way that hanfu is defined by most is that its shape and construction is designed off of these relics, so let’s take a look at the real historical references that we have. A quick disclaimer—this series of articles is a result of my own research. I’m not a trained historian or archaeologist, I’m an inexperienced student with an interest in hanfu and chinese history. I don’t have a works cited page for these (though I can point you towards some of the resources I used off the top of my head if you really want them), and I didn’t spend a long time verifying my sources beyond checking with multiple sources to make sure the information was consistent, because frankly I don’t have the time to do that. All articles will come with this disclaimer, so please, please understand that I’m doing my best with what I…
