Hanfu Outfit Breakdown: Rainbow 6 Song Hanyuansu
Hey everyone! I’m so sorry about how late this is since I promised this like… three weeks ago, but here’s a little outfit analysis of the rainbow pride outfit that I designed and posted a few pictures of last month! Disclaimer: While I design the shapes, fabrics, and combinations of my hanfu designs, I do not sew any of my hanfu designs! This is due to the fact that I could not sew a straight line to sew my life. Instead I work with various small independent tailors, seamstresses and hanfu workshops. THE BASIC STATS I chose to make this set a Song Dynasty hanyuansu. Song style hanfu has long been known to be the most popular in the summer with its flowy and light layers, and me being in Taiwan for pretty much all of pride month meant that I needed to be able to stay cool in 37+ degrees while hanging around outside for pictures. The main modifications in this set are to the top piece, which is a , or camisole, with straps. This is a very simple three-piece set that gives all of its attention to the rainbow skirt. The three pieces include the camisole…- 0

Hanfu in Components VI: Putting It All Together
So now that you’ve learned about all these pieces separately, we arrive at the question: how do we put all of these pieces together? Let’s go over some ways these are usually put together, how to refer to them, and other details that might not have been covered in previous articles. Body, sleeves, collar: these are the main three things that we use to distinguish types of hanfu. In naming conventions, we usually refer to a piece in the order of collar-sleeve-body. Take a look at this image: What body type, sleeve type, and collar type is it? Well, I’ll tell you first that this is a Shan, meaning that it’s a single-layered top or robe shorter than the knees with no yao lan. Take a look at the sleeves—do they curve or change in diameter at all? Yes, they seem to narrow in a striaght line from the root of the sleeve to the cuff, meaning this is a feijixiu design, or airplane sleeve. The collar’s shape is pretty obviously parallel, or duijin, since the two sides come straight down and don’t touch. Well then, we can refer to this as a duijin feijixiu shan: a parallel collar, airplane…- 0

Hanfu Dressing Tutorial – How to Wear a Hezi
Today we bring you a Hanfu dressing tutorial on wearing a Hezi. The Hezi (诃子) is one of the ancient Chinese women's undergarments, popular in the Tang, Song, and Ming dynasties. Total Time: 10 minutes What is a Hezi? Before the Tang dynasty, undergarments had straps on the shoulders, but in the Tang dynasty, there appeared a kind of undergarment without straps, called "Hezi". This was also determined by the shape of the outer garment: women in the Tang dynasty would tie the skirt high up at the bust, and then tie a wide belt at the lower part of the bust. The shoulders, upper chest and back are bare, and the undergarments are covered with a transparent veil, which makes the undergarments look like they are made of delicate and colorful fabrics. In order to accommodate such wearing habits, the underwear should be strapless. According to the legend, the "Hezi" was invented by Yang Yuhuan when a general accidentally scratched her chest, and Yang Yuhuan feared the Emperor would find out. Then, Yang covered chests with a piece of embroidered cloth. Later, slowly, the Hezi also became popular among the people. Step 1 Put the Qixiong dress on first.…- 0

The Integration of Artifacts and Hanfu – [1]
Traditional Chinese painting has a long history, and classic heirloom paintings not only give us an idea of how the ancients lived, but some hanfu styles are even inspired by ancient paintings. The paintings we are going to learn about today have even been "printed" directly on the Chinese hanfu costumes. The traditional style of the hanfu combined with the retro tones of the paintings, makes a difference. A Thousand Li of Rivers and Mountains The painting "A Thousand Li of Rivers and Mountains (千里江山图)", now collected in the Palace Museum in Beijing, is one of the ten most famous Chinese paintings, the work of Wang Ximeng of the Song Dynasty. He was only 18 years old when this painting was completed. Wang Ximeng's "A Thousand Li of Rivers and Mountains," 51.5 cm wide and 1,191.5 cm long, is painting on silk in green and blue, lavish in its elegance, combining the majesty of a thousand miles of rivers and mountains with the smoky atmosphere of life. There are not only magnificent mountains and rocks in the whole work, but also inhabitants on the riverside, who are either moored or working, adding dynamic beauty to the painting. The whole…- 0

How To Choose Your First Hanfu
So many choices for your first hanfu—what are some factors you should consider before making your first purchase? I’ve seen a lot of people around asking what hanfu they should buy first and how to pick their first set, so I decided to do an article on some of the factors that you might not have though to consider when choosing your first set. Without further ado, here’s how to pick your first hanfu! PRICE: HOW MUCH SHOULD I SPEND? No matter who you are or how much you predict you’re going to like hanfu, I recommend starting cheap. If you’re buying from an English site, I’d say around the $50-$60USD range is a fair bet; if you’re looking on Taobao I would day that 100-150RMB is a good range (not factoring in shipping) for your very first set. Use your budget as the first and foremost filter for finding your first set—keep it flexible if you’d like, but don’t waste money on your first set when you haven’t explored everything yet. You can think about changing your budget once you get a feel for what you like: do you want to buy a lot of hanfu because you’re not…- 0
